At Badlands, rifles are not just parts slapped together; every upper is assembled with precision and intent. Tolerance stacking is a critical factor in building AR-15s, and not all components are created equal. Even highly respected manufacturers work within specified tolerances, which means not every part will play perfectly with every other part.

Because we do not manufacture the components ourselves, meticulous gauging and part selection are essential. We exclusively use Colt upper receivers because they have proven to be the most consistent in our experience, and to date we have not encountered one that required face lapping to meet our standards. The barrel is headspaced using a Colt bolt, and while many other bolts will function, a Colt BCG is strongly recommended, as they arrive in spec far more consistently than most alternatives.

During the build process, several upper receivers may be test-fitted before finding the one that mates perfectly with the M4 feed ramps on the barrel extension. This ensures optimal alignment for reliable feeding and long-term performance. The feed ramp extension is polished through a five-step process to a mirror finish, aiding consistency and helping the rifle maintain repeatable accuracy.

The barrel is also bedded to the receiver, a refinement that, in internal testing, reduced standard deviation by approximately 5 SD, tightening overall consistency. This upper features a Douglas stainless steel barrel, dimpled for a set screw and turned specifically with the Badger MK12 gas block in mind. For added security and peace of mind, only knurled gas block set screws are used to resist movement under recoil and heat.

Whether this upper becomes a range toy or a duty rifle, you can be confident that the assembly work has been done to a high standard. When investing in an upper of this caliber, a proper break-in—or “seasoning” the barrel—is highly recommended. While this process is not claimed to increase raw accuracy, it can make cleaning significantly easier and help maintain consistent performance over time.

Our suggested break-in procedure is as follows:

  • Fire 1 round, then brush the bore and run patches until they come out clean and free of carbon.

  • Repeat that single-shot-and-clean cycle for a total of 5 rounds.

  • Next, fire 5 rounds in succession, then repeat the same thorough cleaning process.

  • Perform that 5-round string and cleaning cycle 4 times.

This results in a total of 25 rounds for break-in and sets your new upper up for easier maintenance and consistent performance
